Keep your head, and your clothes on
HOW to promote your book and keep your clothes on. It’s the provocative message behind a writing workshop being offered by local author and journalist Susanna Freymark.
She will will share what she learned about “maximising your moment in the spotlight” at a workshop from 10am-1pm on Saturday, May 28 at Byron Community College, 107 Jonson St.
“Most writers struggle to get media attention to publicise their work, so it’s important to make the most of your moment in the spotlight,” she said.
Susanna’s spotlight came when she found herself pictured in bed with her husband on the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald.
It was all part of publicity for her book, Losing February.
“Part memoir, my book was about sex and love and, as a result, it felt exposing to write and publish,” she said.
“The front page exposure was intense,” she said. “But I was prepared and I was ready to take advantage of the opportunity.”
Freymark says writing her book was a dream come true, even more more so when Losing February was published by Pan Macmillan in 2013.
“Years of dreaming and working at writing, mostly in isolation, was turned on its head when my book was published,” she said.
“Suddenly I was in the spotlight, in the real world and online.”
Susanna’s background as a journalist meant she knew the ins and outs of how the media worked and her passion for social media helped publicise her book.
Before her book came out she started blogging, set up a website, an author Facebook Page, Twitter and Instagram accounts to give her an “author presence” on the internet.
“It’s too late once you’re book is published because you’re so busy,” she said.
At the workshop she will share her secrets on being the go-to person for interviews and give her 10 tips all new authors need to know.
Cost is $48 members and $58 non-members.
