'Kangaroo, koala, boomerang' to feature on Modern Family

THE cast of Modern Family is heading down under next month.

The Emmy Award-winning US sitcom's cast and crew will fly in from Los Angeles in February, courtesy of Qantas, to film an episode in which the extended family at the heart of the show takes a vacation in Australia.

Filming is expected to take two weeks, with the episode airing later this year as part of the show's fifth season.

"An estimated 25 million people will watch this episode when it first airs, which is fantastic exposure and great news for tourism," said Qantas CEO Alan Joyce.

The entire Modern Family cast, including Ed O'Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Sarah Hyland, Nolan Gould, Ariel Winter, Rico Rodriguez and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons will join co-creator and executive producer Steven Levitan during next month's visit.

"We are so excited about our trip down under and we promise not to do any 'down under' jokes," said Levitan in a statement released by Ten.

"We look forward to a fantastic shoot in many exotic locations. We loved the family vacation episodes we shot in Hawaii and Wyoming - this one is certainly our most ambitious yet."

Levitan showed off his cheeky sense of humour behind the show's four consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, joking about what would feature in the episode.

"We promise to feature a kangaroo, a koala and a boomerang," he said.

"I'm sure there will be lots more, but so far that's all we know about Australia - our American school system is a disaster. So we thank Qantas for this amazing opportunity to broaden our horizons. Plus it'll be nice to go to a place where everyone looks like Hugh Jackman and Miranda Kerr."

During a visit in November, Ferguson didn't deny rumours that an Australia episode was in the works. His on-screen partner, played by Stonestreet, is already familiar to Aussie viewers as the face of Big W's recent ad campaigns.

The show's producers will travel to Australia in advance of the shoot this month to scout and identify filming locations and potential storylines.

The fifth season of the show will return to Channel 10 soon.
