'Just grind': Jason Day produces solid opening round

THE prospect of good weather on the weekend will get Jason Day through another grinding round on day two.

In his first competitive round since revealing his mother's cancer battle, the world No.3 endured some horror winds on the back nine to produce a commendable two-over-par 74.

He only had one bogey through his opening 10 holes before a disaster at the 11th, where his approach sailed left into the pond.

After taking a drop he nearly chipped in, but his ball hit the flagstick and bounced to two metres away. He missed the putt for what would have been a great bogey, and took six.

"If you're a degree off, it can do exactly what it did. A degree off is one second in the clock of your watch. And that's how delicate it is," he said after his round.

"I was playing pretty decent up to that point."

Day bounced back with good birdies at the par-five 15th, which was averaging over par, and the 16th before giving one back on 17.

He then missed a snaking three-metre birdie putt on the last to get out of the wind with a score he thinks could be thereabouts on the weekend, if he can get just through Friday too.

"Yeah, just grind. That's the only real thing you can do is just try and grind and have more birdies than bogeys," he said.

"But I think I'm playing some decent golf. I've just got to get myself a little bit closer to the hole.

"If I get a good one going tomorrow, maybe a couple under tomorrow, it shoots you right around the lead - obviously determining on what the other guys do.

"We're going to have great weather on the weekend, just have to go on through and try and make your birdies and stuff on the weekend."
