Join in all the fun of the 123rd Byron Bay Cup

PREPARATIONS are well under way for this year’s Byron Bay Cup to be run in Ballina on Sunday, August 28.

This year will be the 123rd anniversary of the first running of the Cup, which took place on the beach at Byron Bay in 1888 on the same day as the official opening of the Byron Bay jetty.

The Ballina Jockey Club has developed the Byron Bay Cup as part of its spring racing carnival leading up to the Ballina Cup, which will be run on September 8.

Chairman of the Ballina Jockey Club, Robert Pitt, said that to make things easy for Byron Bay residents to attend the Cup, the club was selling advance purchase tickets in Byron Bay and Suffolk Park which included gate entry and bus transport to and from the racecourse.

Tickets are available from the Byron Shire News office in Jonson Street, The Park Hotel at Suffolk Park and the Byron Bay Services Club. The cost is $15.

The Cup will feature fashions on the field, and Byron Bay businesswoman Anna Middleton has donated a $200 voucher for the winner of the event.

This is a TAB meeting with bookmakers, and bar and food facilities will also be available.

Individual race sponsorships have all been sold.

The Park Hotel at Suffolk Park is sponsoring the Cup.

The hotel will host a Calcutta on Saturday, August 27, and anyone interested in attending is welcome.

“We hope that Byron Bay residents will take this opportunity to come for all the fun and excitement of the day,” Mr Pitt said.
