Joey wins Splendour holiday
APN online Splendour in the Grass competition winner Joey McKenzie can sit back and enjoy three days of live music without having to sling drinks.
The 21-year-old from the Brisbane suburb of Balmoral worked behind the bar at last year’s festival.
“I worked behind the bar up at the main stage, so I basically got paid to see all of the best bands on the main stage,” she said.
“Florence and The Machine were so amazing. I worked a day shift that day, so I got to go down right to the front and see them. That was great.”
McKenzie said she was excited about being able to concentrate on the bands this year, rather than trying to catch them in between drink orders.
"I’m probably most looking forward to seeing Coldplay and Kanye West," she said.
She won double camping passes and the chance to interview a band during the three-day festival with APN's Group Entertainment Editor.
Her winning photo entry was taken at last year’s festival and features a newly formed festival friendship that embodies Splendour’s social atmosphere.
“When it was time for Florence my friend went to watch Art vs Science, so we kind of split up,” she said.
“I met him (the man in the photo) in the crowd for Florence. He took me under his wing and became friends with me so I wasn’t alone. We spent the rest of the festival hanging out.”
McKenzie is taking her mate Shalyce McLean, 23, who worked with her at Splendour last year.
“I figured I kind of had to take her after all the great memories we made last year,” she said.
The friends are travelling to Europe in August and did not think they would be able to make it to Woodford.
“We’re trying to save for Europe, so neither of us had the money to go this year,” she said.
“This will be a little holiday in between all that work before our big holiday.”
Splendour in the Grass runs from July 29-31 at Woodfordia in Woodford, Queensland. More information and playing times at the Splendour website.
