Jimmy Fallon to replace Jay Leno on the Tonight Show

TV veteran Jay Leno will pass the late night torch to Jimmy Fallon.

America's NBC network has confirmed that Leno will retire next year after 22 years on the Tonight Show.

The long-running chat show will move across the country from Los Angeles to New York, where Fallon currently records Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

It's the second time Leno has left the Tonight Show, after Conan O'Brien's failed attempt at replacing him in 2009.

In typical comedic fashion, Leno and Fallon addressed the rumours earlier this week with a West Side Story duet on the Tonight Show.

Fallon cut his teeth on sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live before landing his Late Night hosting gig in 2009.
