WHAT is it about Sunshine Coast sailors that they seem to be the youngest or the quickest?

The man who helped Jessica Watson glide into history books as the youngest solo sailor to circumnavigate the world is getting ready to break a new record.

Bruce Arms will leave from Mooloolaba in June in an attempt to sail around Australia in just 35 days, which would shave seven days off the existing record.

Bruce and Jessica teamed up at the weekend to compete in the Brisbane to Gladstone Multihull Yacht Race, a practice run for the upcoming record sail.

They crossed the line in seventh position on Saturday in Big Wave Rider, the vessel Bruce is taking around the country.

The mentor will turn the mentored in his upcoming adventure and says he found a lot of inspiration from Jessica.

“She’s said she’s going to be in touch with me as much as she can during the trip,” Bruce said.

“She’s looking forward to being on the other end of the phone like I was with her.

“Making sure I’m sleeping enough and making sure I’m eating enough. Jess has given me a lot of inspiration as well.”

While he has been in Central Queensland, Bruce has caught up with weather forecaster Mike Griffin, who will prepare daily reports during the record attempt.

Though he will be racing against the clock, Bruce insists he will have time to enjoy the landscapes of islands and parts of the Australian coast as he sails past.

Bruce will sail back to the Sunshine Coast later this week. He will begin the record attempt in his catamaran on June 4, when he heads north from Mooloolaba.
