Jailed for child sex offences when he too was a child

A MAN has been jailed for sex offences against two young sisters that were committed when he too was a child.

The 22-year-old was clearly distraught when he appeared in Maroochydore District Court on Monday to plead guilty to six counts of indecent treatment of a child under 12 as well as rape of a child under 12, attempted rape and indecent treatment of a child under 16.

Crown prosecutor Michael Gawrych said the man committed the offences on his step sisters when he was aged between 14 and 17.

His victims were aged between eight to 12 and six to 10 respectively.

Their mother and the man's father had been in a de facto relationship, which has since broken down.

Mr Gawrych said the offending had occurred over a period of several years primarily while the children were asleep.

He said the offences had significantly affected the victims, particularly the younger sibling.

"Your Honour, to say that it has had an effect on the child is perhaps an understatement," Mr Gawrych said.

Judge Robertson said a victim impact statement showed the horrifying effect the man's behaviour had on the girls as they grew into teenagers.

He noted by pleading guilty and avoiding a trial, the man had negated the need for the children to be cross examined in a court room.

However, he said the girls were very young and in circumstances which left them vulnerable to his predation.

The man was sentenced to three years in prison to be suspended after nine months for a further five years.
