Jackie O threatened to quit over equal pay

LISA Wilkinson has dominated the news cycle in the last 24 hours thanks to her decision to walk away from the Today show after they refused to pay her the same amount as Karl Stefanovic.

It was a gutsy move and one that radio star Jackie O has revealed she was prepared to make just over a year ago if she wasn't given pay parity with her longtime co-host, Kyle Sandilands.

Speaking exclusively to news.com.au, the KIIS FM star opened up about her 2016 contract which saw her negotiate equal pay with Kyle Sandilands for the first time in their 17-year partnership.

"I've been in that situation over the years where you do get frustrated that the women aren't getting equal pay to men and they're seen somehow as less worthy," Jackie O said.

"You get to a point where you know when you're ready to walk and I think Lisa [Wilkinson] was obviously at that point as well."

Jackie O demanded and was given parity in the pair's five-year contract with ARN which they signed in July last year.

The deal guarantees them at least $20 million each in that time frame.

"You know when you need to finally take a stand," Jackie O told news.com.au, "and it's not easy to do".

"You need to, first of all, make sure that you've got another job to go to and also you're not always in a position where you have that financial security behind you. Lisa's probably at a point, as was I, where we could walk away and we're not going to lose everything.

"I've had some good negotiations where they've been amazing and some not so great ones, but it all depends on who you deal with and I think this company [ARN] has been amazing for that. I do think they really appreciate the women that work on air here."

If the rumours are true, ARN clearly appreciates their female stars more than Channel Nine does.

According to entertainment reporter Peter Ford, when talks broke down between Channel Nine and Wilkinson's management, the network tried to call her bluff.

"They said: 'This isn't going anywhere, let's part ways,'" Ford told news.com.au.

"Little did they know she did have another offer set to be taken up with Ten."

Jackie O told news.com.au that Wilkinson should be applauded for the move, saying, "It's tough to take a stand like that but obviously she got to a point where she needed to stand up for herself and say, 'No, that's not acceptable.'"
