Coldest day of the year set to hit the Northern Rivers
THE weekend weather torment is set to continue, with a strong cold front set to make Sunday the coldest day of the year so far on the Northern Rivers.
It's also likely to become the first snowfall for the Northern Tablelands in 2016.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster, Gabrielle Woodhouse, said the cold front would come across the state at the end of the week.
"Behind that cold front we will see temperatures drop ... Friday we're looking at temperatures between the 20-22 degree range in Lismore, Ballina, around the coast," she said.
"Then on Saturday or after the front goes through, we're looking at 17-18 degrees."
It will be the coldest daytime maximum temperature for Lismore, Ballina and Byron Bay this year.
Ms Woodhouse said Armidale could expect around 10 degrees on Saturday.
Lismore will also shiver through the nights with a minimum of 5 degrees expected on Saturday and 3 degrees expected Sunday.
In terms of snowfall Ms Woodhouse said it was the first time it was probable for the season.
"It's the first time we've seen the possibility of snow reaching the tableland and it's the first cold outbreak we're going to have for winter by the looks of things," she said.
On Friday in the southern half of the state snow is expected down to 800-1000m while towards the Northern Tablelands it's looking like snow will fall down to 1000m.
It's unlikely snow will fall as far north as Tenterfield.
When asked why the state has been experiencing extremes such as floods, severe wind, and now snow, Ms Woodhouse said it was usual for June.
"It's just that time of year," she said. "We'll often experience those low pressure troughs transitioning to east coast lows particularly through the winter months."
"June is one of those months we see - climatologically-wise - the greatest number of east coast lows, and it's usually June we'll start to see those big cold fronts come through as well."
