It's official: Sydney FC to face Liverpool

LIVERPOOL will play Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday, May 24, the club has confirmed.

The hastily organised post-season friendly will see the English Premier League club return to Australia after games in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne since 2013, as well as a Legends clash at Homebush in 2016 against an Australian Legends outfit.

The Anfield club's love affair with Australia will see them return to the country immediately after the end of the Premier League campaign, which only wraps up on 22 May.

"We have so many incredible fans in Australia and there is always a brilliant atmosphere when we play over here," club legend Ian Rush said.

"This is the first time the lads have played in Sydney and they're really looking forward to a great match against one of Australia's best A-League teams."

Jurgen Klopp said in a message to Liverpool fans: "Everyone tells me how passionate the Reds support is in Australia. I can't wait to see it for myself."

Sydney FC, who will hope to contest the game as A-League champions, will get the chance to play the Reds after games against Chelsea and Tottenham in recent years.

"It will be a fabulous occasion to see so many Sydney FC Members and fans standing side by side with Liverpool supporters," said coach Graham Arnold.

"Liverpool will provide our boys with a world class opposition to test their skills against.

"It will also be a fabulous opportunity to see how the best in the Hyundai A-League compare to one of the Premier League's top four clubs."

Sky Blues skipper Alex Brosque said: "Liverpool FC are one of history's great football clubs and it will be an honour to walk out wearing our Sydney FC colours alongside them.

"It is a game myself and all of our team are looking forward to immensely and one our Members and fans will relish too."
