THE Department of Main Roads and Transport is investigating the dangerous Eversleigh Road intersection on the Bruce Hwy.

The hazardous stretch of road between Mackay and Sarina was identified in a 2011 RACQ report as one of the worst in the country.

A department spokeswoman said the results of the investigation were confidential.

The stretch has claimed three lives in the space of just over three hours.

Two girls, aged 6 and 9, died in a three-vehicle crash at Sandy Creek on Wednesday afternoon. Their mother was in a critical but stable condition in hospital yesterday afternoon.

A friend said the mother had been driving her daughters to his family's house to pick up a battery charger that they had left there.

The Federal Government has allocated $36.5 million towards 16 overtaking upgrades between Sarina and Bowen by 2014 but the RACQ has told News Ltd that more needs to be done.

The department said investigations into the crash would be undertaken.

"We undertake investigations at the location of all fatal crashes that occur on the state-controlled road network," the spokeswoman said.

"An investigation into the incident on the Bruce Highway, near Eversleigh Road, in April is ongoing."

The stretch of highway near the Eversleigh Road intersection carried about 8000 vehicles daily, the department spokeswoman said.

Road Accident Action Group safety co-ordinator Graeme Ransley said there had been several fatal accidents near the intersection.

It was crucial motorists were informed of the dangers of that stretch of road.

"A lot of the people would be unaware they are driving through a high-crash zone," he said.
