Ipswich is nation's smartest city

FORGET the Smart State, Ipswich has been named Australia’s smartest city and one of the world’s most intelligent.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said Ipswich’s focus on creating a modern city centred on information and communication technologies earned it a spot among the finalists in the Intelligent Communities Smart21.

"This is tremendous news for Ipswich and recognises the hard work council has invested into creating a technology renaissance,” Cr Pisasale said.

“Not too long ago Ipswich was in decline. We had high unemployment and our young people couldn’t wait to leave the city.

"In 1995 Ipswich took a huge step towards the future, creating Global Information Links (GIL) and becoming the first local authority to provide internet access.

“Now we have two university campuses, an unemployment rate below the state average, thriving development and an award-winning master-planned community with a data centre and fibre network at its heart.”

Ipswich was the only Australian city short-listed in the awards program run by the Intelligent Communities Forum (ICF), a non-profit think tank that focuses on job creation and economic development in the broadband economy.
