Jai Morcom inquest inconclusive

DEPUTY State Coroner Hugh Dillon has returned an open finding at the inquest into the death of Mullumbimby High School student Jai Morcom following a schoolyard brawl in 2009.

After two weeks of testimony from more than 40 witnesses, Mr Dillon said it was impossible to determine the cause or type of brain haemorrhage that killed Jai, nor was it possible attribute blame.

“Despite the massive effort made by investigators, it has been the source of immense frustration and disappointment to me and my team that we could find little or persuasive evidence to account for Jai’s death,” he said.

“Evidence that appeared strong in the statements turned out in most cases to not be so.

“This may be of great disappointment to many.”

With no evidence of skull fractures or heavy bruising, many of the testimonies describing brutal bashings had to be discarded.

“There is nothing to suggest Jai was bashed to death and he certainly was not murdered,” Mr Dillon said.

“It would be wrong to point the finger (at anyone) nor was the school to blame. Jai was simply the victim of terrible luck.”

One thing the inquest did achieve was to rule out several of the most common theories that had being circulating in the community, as well as to unequivocally clear two former students of any culpability.
