Ingall moves ahead of Skaife with 221 champ race starts

RUSSELL Ingall will overtake Mark Skaife and move into second place on the list of all-time starts in Touring Car/V8 Supercars championship races at Symmons Plains in Tasmania this weekend.

But the Commodore driver said while he was thrilled to go past his old sparring partner in the history books, he was more interested in results on the track in what will be his 18th and final season in the competition.

"It's an honour to be considered in the same company as Mark, but ultimately 221 starts is just a number and I'm more interested in race wins and championships," Ingall said.

Provided he contests every round from now on, Ingall will pass John Bowe's record of 225 starts in the Townsville 400 in July.

The 1995 Bathurst winner has won at Symmons Plains before, and said because the circuit tended to favoured power over techical prowess.

"It's a horsepower circuit and the times in qualifying tend to be very close," Ingall said.

The round will consist of a new 60/60 super sprint format today, featuring two 60km halves separated by a short break.

Two 100km races will be held on Sunday.
