Indian govt dives into debate
BYRON Bay fashion house Lisa Blue’s swimwear depicting Hindu Goddess Lakshmi remains a topic of debate, with the Indian Government now weighing in on the issue.
In a statement issued by The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India, the government "has conveyed its deep concern to the Australian High Commission in New Delhi, asking that all concerned be apprised of the Indian religious sensitivities in the matter".
The swimwear featured on the catwalk show at Royal Australian Fashion Week in Sydney last week, causing a stir in India where protestors from the Hindu community burnt the Australian flag while holding images of the swimwear.
In response, designer Lisa Burke issued a statement announcing the line featuring the offending image would be discontinued.
The designer’s statement said: "The use of images of Goddess Lakshmi was not in any way a measure of calculated risk taking, simply it was a desire to celebrate different cultures and share that through our brand."
The issue was raised at a press conference with trade minister Craig Emerson and Dr Anand Sharma, India’s minister for commerce and industry, today in Canberra. Full details are expected later today.
