India takes out first T20 international over Aussies

INDIA piled more misery on Australia with a nine-wicket win in the first of three T20 internationals.

The Aussies could only manage 8-118 in Ranchi before rain halted their innings after 18.4 overs.

The weather forced India to chase down 48 runs in six and the hosts achieved the win with three balls to spare.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan, on 15, and skipper Virat Kohli, on 22, remained unbeaten.

Missing captain Steve Smith, forced to miss the three T20 games with a shoulder injury, the tourists could not deal with the left-arm wrist spin of Kuldeep Yadav.

Yadav took 2-16 to restrict Australia to a below-par total.

Opener Aaron Finch's 30-ball 42 was the only bright spark for the team captained by David Warner.

Warner was dismissed in the first over after chopping a ball from from Bhuvneshwar Kumar on to his stumps for eight.

Finch added 47 with Glenn Maxwell but India's spinners soon turned on the heat.

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal got Maxwell for 17 and Yadav bowled Finch in the 10th over.

Wickets fell at regular intervals to leave the Aussies well short of a defendable target.

In reply, the hosts lost Rohit Sharma early after the opener was bowled by paceman Nathan Coulter-Nile for 11 but Dhawan and Kohli then took the attack to Australia as they hit six boundaries between them to ensure a big win.

"At the end of the day, it's a poor result for us. We have to be better next game,” said a disappointed Warner.

The second T20 is scheduled on Tuesday in Guwahati.
