Hurst shows class in Big Swim

Olympian Ky Hurst showed his class yet again by taking out Sunday’s Byron Bay Beach Hotel Winter Whales Ocean Swim Classic.

In magnificent autumn conditions, Hurst, a previous three-time winner of the event, was one of 1954 competitors who took on the 2.2km swim from Wategos Beach to Main Beach. His time for the swim was 19 minutes 38 seconds.

First woman home in the elite division in 19 minutes 45 seconds was Melissa Gorman, the fifth win for the Queenslander.

Competitors of all ages came from around Australia and the world to compete in the popular swim in a range of age divisions.

With 357 competitors competing in the earlier mini-swim from Clarks Beach to Main Beach, won by Mitchell Simmons, total entries for the day added up to 2211, up on last year’s total of 2041.

Organisers are hoping the event will raise more than $60,000 for local community groups.
