Hunt for thieves who stole ashes of victim's mother

A GRIEVING young woman has been devastated by the theft of a precious bag containing her mother's ashes and a family heirloom at a busy Sydney train station.

The 21-year-old had placed the blue-zip up backpack outside a baggage office at Central Station's country train platform when it disappeared late Wednesday.

Inside the bag was a blue box containing her late mother's cremated remains, an engraved gold watch and various personal items.

After reviewing CCTV footage on Thursday, police released an image of a couple who may have taken the bag before travelling elsewhere.

The woman is described as Caucasian with blond hair and was last seen wearing a black jacket with brown fur around the collar, black tights with holes or a white pattern.

She was with a man dressed in a white jumper and black or dark grey track pants.
