Human rights lawyer accuses govt of "systematic child abuse"

A LAW group has attacked the Federal Government's policy of keeping children in immigration detention, following the release of an Australian Human Rights Commission report.

The Abbott government released the report on Wednesday night. It showed more than 300 children held in the system had committed or threatened self-harm in a 15-month period, as well as 30 sexual assaults.

Lawyer's Weekly reported Australian Lawyers for Human Rights spokeswoman Claire Hammerton said the findings revealed the Australian Government was engaged in "systematic child abuse" and there was no reasonable justification for the policy of keeping kids in immigration detention.
