How to keep it clean in this dirty world
REGARDLESS of the style of interior you prefer - be it minimalist, eclectic, vintage/retro, fashionably contemporary - what is always in style is fresh and clean. I've long been a fan of Shannon Lush and Jennifer Fleming of Spotless fame.
The Spotless phenomenon is also responsible for introducing bicarb and white vinegar plus other common remedies to millions of households.
Here are some broad-stroke tips for cleaning that I've gleaned along the way.
DE-CLUTTER: There's a reason so many column inches are devoted to this topic; the vast majority of us simply have too much stuff. Enact a ruthless purge, have a garage sale and commit to donating what doesn't sell to a charity store. You'll be amazed how freeing it is to clear clutter.
CLEANING BASICS: Beds. Change your sheets every week and don't forget the mattress. You can sprinkle some soda bicarb on the mattress, let it settle, then vacuum. This leaves the bed fresh for new linen. Clean pillows and doonas every six months.
The kitchen requires daily maintenance obviously, but a thorough clean (splashbacks, around the stove tops) at least weekly. Fridges and ovens should be at least wiped clean every month and deeply cleaned every three months.
Bathrooms are often the least clean space as the constant humidity creates mould. Clean your shower/baths weekly, plus toilets and sinks, and don't forget to clean the toothbrush holders.
