Home service seeks volunteers

The Ballina-Byron Volunteer Home Visiting Service (BBVHVS) is seeking volunteers from the Ballina-Byron Shire area who are interested in joining a team of community minded people.

If you enjoy working with babies and young children, have a belief that families have a right to enjoy raising their children in healthy, supported environments, and have a couple of hours per week to offer, then the service is very interested in hearing from you.

Parenting, although often fun and full of loving moments, can also be emotionally and physically demanding. Home Visiting Volunteers can assist with maintaining 'healthy family stress levels' by supporting families to link into their local community and service options, reduce a parent's sense of isolation, and enhance the fun of raising children.

The BBVHVS is a Families NSW initiative and auspiced by the Ballina-Byron Family Centre. The service matches specially trained volunteers with families to assist with practical support, such as being an extra pair of hands on shopping trips or outings.

Volunteers may provide stimulating play for young children while a parent has quality time with another child, or just have a 'cuppa' and a chat with a parent who is feeling isolated.

If you are interested in receiving the free, specialised training, ongoing support, and workshop opportunities, then please phone Bernie or Eve on 66864109 for an application.

The next training period (five Thursdays) starts in March 2009.
