Home care could prolong lives of patients

THE lives of hundreds of Australians with heart disease could be prolonged if state governments let cardiac nurses into the homes of patients.

New research released yesterday by the Australian Catholic University showed a 5% reduction in the number of patients who died in a home-care situation, compared to "standard care" in hospitals.

The study, led by Prof Simon Stewart, examined 1226 patients across the country. It found 94 of 612 patients, or 15%, died while in home care, compared to 124 of 614, or 20%, of those in standard care.
