Holman says Roar must get better

FOOTBALL: Former Socceroo Brett Holman says things must improve at Brisbane Roar or the team faces the possibility of more beatings like the 4-0 one suffered in Newcastle on Sunday.

The Roar was well off the pace against a Jets team inspired by ex-Melbourne Victory midfielder Andrew Nabbout.

Jack Hingert's own goal was the difference between the sides in the first half before Nigel Boogaard, Steve Ugarkovic and former Roar midfielder Devante Clut added second-half goals.

Holman said it would take time for the new-look Roar attacking players to gel but added there was no time to relax.

"It's still early days,” he said.

"To put a finger on it is difficult. It's working well but it's just that last little bit or that last pass which just isn't sharp enough.

"We have to fix it pretty quick or we're going to cop a few more results like this.”

Holman made no excuses for the beating at McDonald Jones Stadium against a side which struggled last season.

"They were just sharper than us,” he told Fox Sports.

"The first half it was pretty much equal. We gave away a silly goal when we took a little bit of a risk at the back, they sneak in and it's a terrible own goal. You can't do anything about it.

"Their keeper (Jack Duncan) then makes a great save with Tommy Oar's shot.

"I thought we dominated in the first half with the possession but the second half we lost our way and they were deadly on the counter attack.”

Perth Glory, meanwhile, has won its first game of the season with a 2-0 home success over bottom club Wellington Phoenix.

Last year's Johnny Warren Medal winner, Diego Castro, broke the deadlock with a penalty early in the second half before Andy Keogh missed his spot kick to keep the Phoenix in it.

Nebojsa Marinkovic's powerful shot then sealed the points for the Glory to leave Wellington searching for a first win of the season.
