Hollindale a good pointer for Doomben
The Hollindale Stakes is the feature race at the Gold Coast tomorrow, and if recent history tells us anything it is that the winner of the Group 1 Doomben Cup in a fortnight will come out of that race.
Pornichet missed out on a start in the Hollindale Stakes and went on to win the Doomben Cup last year, but quality gallopers including Streama (2014), Mawingo (2012), Scenic Shot (2009 and 2011) and Metal Bender (2010) all had their final lead-up run in the Hollindale Stakes before taking out the Doomben Cup.
That is not to say that you need to win the Hollindale Stakes to take out the Doomben Cup - Streama, Metal Bender and Above Deck are the only horses to complete the double in the past 10 years - but history suggests you need to give any Hollindale Stakes placegetter plenty of consideration when assessing form for the Doomben Cup.
This year's Hollindale Stakes looks very open, and you can make a case for more than half the field.
Leading trainer Chris Waller has a good record in the race, and will be represented by veteran gelding Strawberry Boy, inconsistent grey Kool Kompany and class import Spiritjim, while Godolphin has a strong hand with Hauraki, It's Somewhat and Old North.
Leebaz is back to defend his title and the local charge is led by Sir Moments, who was only narrowly denied in the Tails Stakes a fortnight ago.
It is tough to work out exactly who is the horse to beat in the Hollindale Stakes, but we are sure to have a much clearer picture for the Doomben Cup at the conclusion of the Group 2 event on Saturday.
There is already plenty of value on offer in the Doomben Cup betting market with Ladbrokes, but you can increase the value further with their Odds Boost Product.
