'He's not out of the woods yet'

STRICKEN Japanese star Admire Deus remains under sedation at the Ballarat Veterinary Clinic as experts decide whether to operate.

The former Caulfield and Melbourne Cup favourite suffered an horrific suspensory ligament injury to his nearside foreleg during trackwork at Warrnambool yesterday.

Darren Weir's assistant trainer Jarrod McLean said Admire Deus was "comfortable as possible."

"The last I've heard was that things were pretty good, everything considered," McLean said.

"He's not out of the woods yet and there are concerns over blood supply and the potential for laminitis.

"He's in the best of care."

The unusual nature of the injury has prompted Ballarat veterinary experts to seek other opinions on the best course of treatment.

The seven-year-old was the subject of a massive Caulfield Cup plunge on Monday night with one bet of $30,000.

Admire Deus was bought from Japanese interests by Australian Bloodstock, which has owned a string of top horses includuing 2014 Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist.
