Head for the light

CALLING all runners and walkers, young and old, the Byron Lighthouse Run wants you.

The Byron Lighthouse Run is in its seventh year and organisers are urging interested parties to register to run or walk on September 15, all to raise money for charity.

This year, all profits will be donated to Lismore's Our House and Langtang Valley Health in Nepal.

Our House is a low-cost facility that provides accommodation for families and patients undergoing treatment for cancer or other illness.

Conversely, Langtang Valley Health in Nepal is four days walk from the closest medical centre.

Half the funds raised by the run will go toward medical equipment and staff wages in Nepal, while the other half will go toward maintaining Our House in Lismore.

One of the organisers of the Byron Lighthouse Run, Brigid Kramer is a cancer survivor and said raising money for Our House was very close to her heart.

"Having gone through cancer I know the support of family is very important," Ms Kramer said.

"I can't imagine what it would have been like not to have my family nearby during treatment."

Ms Kramer said having an environment like Our House to recuperate in when you're at your worst can make all the difference.

Our House funding co-ordinator Rebekka Battista said providing comfortable and affordable lodgings for cancer sufferers and families was the ethos of Our House.

"At the heart of Our House was the idea to provide a nurturing environment for people who are unwell and their families," Ms Battista said.

The Byron Lighthouse Run is either a 6.7km walk or 10km run. It starts at 7am at Denning Park next to the surf lifesaving club in Byron Bay on Sept 15.
