IT'S not every day you get to meet Dick Smith, or be handed $10,000 by him.

Happy Paws owner Sally Rogers can now claim it has happened to her after she flew to Sydney with dedicated volunteer Barbara Peters last week to collect a cheque on behalf of the Eatonsville animal shelter, as part of a $1 million Dick Smith Food Foundation charity giveaway.

This was despite the fact that she had been bitten by a redback spider as she put her boots on to go to the airport the day before.

By the time she received medical treatment the next day, her leg was "the size of a balloon" but now that she is back on her feet, Ms Rogers said the donation of $10,000 would go a long way to covering the vet bills.

"We currently have a vet bill in excess of $20,000 due to the number of puppies and kittens we have desexed, chipped and vaccinated since just before Christmas," she said.

"The numbers this year is the most we have ever had to deal with during this holiday period in the nine years we have been operating."
