Gurranang, Matenga Creek fires continue

FIREFIGHTERS are still trying to contain a fire near Russell Road at Gurranang, 35km north of Grafton.

There were not any properties under threat as of 3.12pm today, a NSW Rural Fire Service statement said.

"However people in the area should continue to monitor the situation and follow the advice of firefighters," the statement said.

"Residents in the area are advised that they may continue to experience smoke and embers and should ensure their home is properly prepared."

Residents at Pringles Way, Summerland Way, Tanglewood Road, and Lawrence Road areas are urged to follow the Bush Fire Survival Plan.

"Local road closures may be in place and the public is asked to stay away from the fire area. Smoke may affect some roads and motorist are advised to slow down and turn on headlights when travelling through the area.

A bushfire emergency was declared in the area on Wednesday afternoon.

"Work is continuing on containment lines and backburning operation on the southern and western parts of the fire."

Meanwhile, backburning on Candole Road to Wooli Road in the Matenga Creek area, 10km west of Minni Water, was completed during the evening last night.

The fire continues to burn at Matenga Creek has so far burned approximately 580 hectares of bushland.

NSW Fire Brigade will be mobilized in the event of a fire, offering tips and support.

Prepare yourself a home emergency kit, details offered by the SES and they can be contacted on 132 500. The SES is a branch of the Emergency Management NSW.

Wind direction is monitored by The Bureau of Meteorology regularly updating warnings in the event of a bushfire in New South Wales.

In the event of a bushfire medical assistance is available through the NSW Ambulance Service. Dial 000 (triple zero) if you need help urgently.
