Green light for library

Byron Shire Council last week voted to unanimously to approve the development application for a new Byron Bay Library.

Mayor Cr Jan Barham said the next step was to apply for a construction certificate prior to tendering.

“We are aiming for the first sod to be turned in early 2010,” she said.

“I thank and acknowledge the hard work of Byron Bay Friends of the Library for their patience and keeping the project to the forefront.

The library will be on the corner of Lawson and Middleton Streets.

She said it would be a lifelong learning centre and the building would also provide space to display.

“The library will also have a section for indigenous research and archival material in recognition of the vital assistance the Arakwal people played in making available the land for the library,” she said.
