Walz bucks trend with good year of growth

WHILE many businesses are struggling with the leveraging of construction work, one Gladstone company has been bucking the trend with a record year of wins and growth.

Gladstone-based infrastructure company Walz Group's double-digit growth comes off the back of a tough few years battling project cancellations and depressed commodity prices.

The company has just won the project to carry out the Run-Of-Mine upgrade project at Curragh, near Blackwater, being carried out with Wesfarmers.

Curragh is one of Australia's largest independent mines and brings jobs to the whole region.

At its peak, the construction work will employ up to 150 people, beginning in February 2015, and planned for completion in December 2015.

Walz Group CEO Mark Gregory said although the resources sector had been turbulent in recent years, the company had managed to adapt its business model to better suit the current market conditions.

"By identifying the client and market's needs, we have modified our business model to a more vertically integrated service offering which has resulted in robust growth in revenue and profitability for the company this year," he said.

"This has also led the business to explore expansion opportunities into other parts of Australia, particularly Western Australia and the Northern Territory."
