Baring a lip for first time in 44 years for Movember
AROUND Australia, men are growing moustaches for the annual Movember challenge to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.
One local real estate agent has joined the challenge in a surprising way.
Brunswick Heads agent Russell Siwicki, he of the legendary moustache, is entering Movember, but instead of growing a moustache, Russell will shave his off.
"I've had a moustache since I was 17 years old," Russell, 61, said.
"My wife and I have been married for 38 years and this will be the first time she or my grown children have ever seen me without a moustache," Russell said.
"I'm going to need to slap on some sunscreen on the top lip after this - it hasn't seen the light of day for a long time."
Russell said he was motivated to join the charity initiative after friends lost their son a year ago to mental health issues.
"I wanted to do something to help where I could, so I signed up for Movember," he said.
To raise as much money as he can, Russell will make a performance event of the shaving, with his wife doing the shearing on stage at the Brunswick Heads Hotel on Sunday at 3pm.
Anyone who wants to donate to Russell's campaign can visit the Movember website and sponsor Russell or they can come along to the shaving event and donate or buy a ticket in a raffle.
Having been an agent in the town for 33 years, this is certainly not the first time Russell has used his high profile to help his community, having long been a member of Rotary and the Brunswick Heads Chamber of Commerce.
"I just like to help my community. You've got to give something back," he said.
"Being in business is not all about making money. It's about the good endorphins that come from helping your community."
