Goalkeeper Romero saves Man United's blushes

FOOTBALL: Goalkeeper Sergio Romero's penalty save has helped Manchester United earn a point at Southampton in a 0-0 draw.

The result means United can finish no higher than sixth with one game remaining and must rely on winning the Europa League final against Ajax to seecure a Champions League berth.

The stalemate was Jose Mourinho's team's 15th draw of the English Premier League season, two more than any other club in the top flight.

Romero, who has been playing in the Europa League games ahead of first-choice keeper David de Gea, got down well to keep out Manolo Gabbiadini's early penalty and then produced a number of saves to keep the Saints out.

The home team also hit the post as it dominated the game at St Mary's Stadium.

The result had no material impact on United's season, given they were already guaranteed to finish sixth but Mourinho will have been concerned by injuries sustained by Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini.

Mourinho is now guaranteed to finish his first United season with fewer league victories than either of his predecessors, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, mustered in the previous three seasons.

For Southampton, the goalless game meant it was the first time in the top division the side has gone four games without scoring.

The Saints stayed eighth, which is the highest position they can hope to achieve ahead of Sunday's final game at home to Stoke City.
