AT FOUR years of age most greyhounds would be past it.

But Glen Gallon is still winning division one races.

He has won $595,000 in prize money over his career, making him one of the top three earning dogs in the history of Australian greyhound racing, and as the only one still running has a chance to pass his rivals as the top earner.

He has raced in 14 group one finals, more than any other dog in the world, and has raced in 34 races.

Glen Gallon is trained by Grandchester trainer Tony Brett, who along with his family who help him, is one of the most accomplished trainers in the country.

Glen Gallon is Mr Brett's highest earning dog, but he also had success with the accomplished Bogie Leigh a decade ago.

The secret to Mr Brett's dogs' success on the track? Giving the dogs the best life he can.

"There's no secret really," he said.

"We give them the best of everything I can afford. The dogs are happy out here. If they aren't happy they won't race, so we treat them as well as we can. We've been blessed over the years."

The dogs are fed top quality beef, live in kennels with reverse cycle air-conditioning and receive massages after races.

"We're one of the few trainers who still walk the dogs every day, we walk them around the outside of our property.

"But nutrition is the real key, like any elite athlete, very much like a human footballer."

While Mr Brett admits greyhound racing developed a bad reputation in some parts of the community, he said without caring for the dogs as much as he does he wouldn't have had the success he has.

Once Glen Gallon retires, expected to be later this year, Mr Brett said his family would be adopting him as their pet.

Doggy Diet

The dogs trained by the Bretts are fed:

  • High quality beef.
  • Dry dog biscuits.
  • Vegetable stew three times a week.
  • The electrolyte content of their food is managed like elite human athletes.
