Man who filmed teen stepdaughter also had child porn
A BUNDABERG man who filmed his teenage stepdaughter in the shower was also caught with child pornography videos on his computer.
The 41-year-old man, who cannot be identified to protect the identity of his victim, pleaded guilty in Bundaberg District Court to one count of possessing child exploitation material and nine charges of making recordings in breach of privacy.
Crown prosecutor Alex Stark said the man was found to have four child porn videos on his computer of girls as young as 12.
"This came to light when the defendant delivered his computer to a computer technician," Mr Stark said.
This came to light when the defendant delivered his computer to a computer technician.
"He asked him not to look at the computer except to remove the virus."
But the technician became suspicious and a search led him to the files, which he reported to police.
In addition to those files, it was revealed that he had recorded his 17-year-old stepdaughter in the bathroom in various states of undress.
"There appear to be nine occasions where he made these recordings," Mr Stark said.
"Nine occasions resulting in a number of videos."
It is believed the videos were taken over a period of about six months.
Defence barrister Michael Holohan said the man did not have a criminal history and had a good working history.
"Since this offence he has left the family home and currently resides here in Bundaberg with his parents," he said.
Mr Holohan said his client had not gone searching for the material and that he came across it when it was sent to him through a peer-to-peer sharing network.
"(He) did not actively search for this material," Mr Holohan said.
"His greatest crime here is keeping it."
Judge Brendan Butler said the man claimed to have viewed the images out of "curiosity" but said recording his stepdaughter indicated his sexual interests might involve young girls.
"You set up a hidden camera to record your stepdaughter in the shower. As a result of this offending you have destroyed your family relationship. It must have been devastating for that young woman to find out you had been filming her secretly in the shower," he said.
The man was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment, immediately suspended for three years, for possessing the child exploitation material and 18 months' probation for making the recordings.
