Gillow in team for world road champs
BELLI Park's Shara Gillow was yesterday named in Cycling Australia's elite team for the 2011 UCI Road World Championships.
The Oceania road race and time trial champion is coming off the back of some strong performances in Europe, including a stage victory in the Tour of Italy.
So it was no real surprise she was among the first names unveiled by the national cycling body for the week-long championships at Copenhagen, Denmark, starting on Monday.
She will compete in the time trial and the road race.
Cycling Australia national performance director Kevin Tabotta said Gillow, 23, and the Australian women's contingent would be among the top chances.
"We go into the event with the goal of winning medals," he said.
"Our women are certainly capable of a place on the podium and our men's team is one of the strongest we've ever named. We will be competitive."
Several factors were taken into account in selecting the team, Tabotta said.
"I believe we've put together teams best suited for the course, taking into account recent form and results," he said. "We've considered the possible scenarios that might arise during the race and selected the riders to suit."
Australia has topped the medal table at the past two road world championships.
"It was certainly one of the hardest teams to pick because the depth and quality in the men's elite ranks is very healthy right now," Tabotta said.
