German galloper makes it four from from

DARREN Weir's German import Plein Ciel could be Hobart Cup-bound after he kept his undefeated Australian record intact with a tough on-speed win in the 1800m Swettenham Stud Championship (1800m).

Plein Ciel was heavily backed from $2.10 to start a $1.95 favourite to make it four wins from four starts for Weir and although he tired in the last 100m always looked to have the race in his keeping.

Weir said Plein Ciel was still learning and would benefit from a trip away to contest the $225,000 Hobart Cup (2200m) on Sunday, February 5.

"It's an option. There's a lot of good staying races around,” Weir said.

"He's going really well. He looked like he was going to run away with it but he wouldn't have wanted it much further as Cool Chap might have won.”

Plein Ciel defeated Cool Chap ($6) by three quarters of a length with Bondeiger ($9.50) the same distance away third.

Ben Allen, who rode Plein Ciel, said the stallion switched off in the closing stages as he had the race won.

Weir and Allen made it a winning double when they combined to win the following race on Burning Front.

Weir said Burning Front was a tough horse who had been a great money-spinner for the stable.

"Once he finds his form, he usually keeps it,” he said.

Burning Front ($6) defeated Hellova Street ($4.40 fav) by a half length with veteran Extra Zero ($81) two-and-a-half lengths away third.

Jake Noonan made the most of his opportunities at Caulfield riding a winning double on Special Diva and Prussian Vixen from his only two rides for the day.
