Geoff keeps his cool and $100,000 with a guess

A QUESTION on the subject of James Bond villains almost cost Regency Downs high school teacher Geoff Keating $100,000.

The father of two appeared last night as a contestant on the Channel Nine quiz show Hot Seat.

A faster-paced spin-off of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, the game involves six contestants playing each episode, each taking turns at answering questions.

The traditional three lifelines are replaced by a single "pass", which can pass the current question to the next contestant in line.

When it was Mr Keating's turn to sit in the hot seat, he was determined to make the most of it.

"Years ago, I had applied to be a contestant on Sale of the Century and when I finally got on the list, the show was canned," he said.

"So when it was advertised that Hot Seat was auditioning for contestants, I signed up with a friend."

Mr Keating entered the game with $10,000 already won, but managed to correctly answer four questions to win $100,000.

The 30-year-old said his approach to answering questions was mix of logic and luck.

"My categories of expertise are politics, geography and history," he said. "Two of the questions I was asked were relatively easy for me to answer. But the other two, which were about art and Bond villains, nearly had me walk away with nothing.

"I am not a fan of Bond films - a lucky guess paid off for that one... it was all or nothing."

Mr Keating said it was hard to comprehend that he had won so much money.

"It's equivalent to about two year's wages," he said.

Mr Keating said he would use the money to help set up his family for the future.
