Gable Tostee blasts 'angry mobs' after Pistorius jail decision
GABLE Tostee has blasted the "angry mobs with flaming torches" for their "ignorance, gossip and hatred" towards convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius, in a social media rant.
In a Facebook post Tostee - now known as Eric Thomas - condemned outspoken critics of Pistorius, claiming they have "no right to pass judgment" on the case, in which the former Paralympian was found guilty of brutally murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Last week a South African court increased Pistorius's sentence from six years in prison to 13 years and five months over Steenkamp's murder on Valentines Day 2013.
Tostee was last year found not guilty of killing his Tinder date Warriena Wright after she fell to her death from his high-rise apartment balcony in Surfers Paradise in 2014.
On Friday the 31-year-old shared his thoughts about the Pistorius case, saying the mob mentality surrounding the conviction is "just as disturbing" as Steenkamp's death.
"What is just as disturbing as the loss of a life in cases like this is society's sick infatuation with them and the inevitable accompanying ignorance, gossip, hatred and moral grandstanding by people who don't have a clue, weren't involved, and have no right to pass judgment," Tostee wrote.
"I do not know the full details of the Pistorius case, whether the verdict was correct, or whether the sentence was appropriate, but neither do 99.9% of the people gossipping about it either."
"It seems simply having an opinion is more important to many than being correct," he added.
One of his followers warned him not to "conflate [Pistorius's] case with your own social injustices", pointing out that unlike Tostee, who was acquitted, Pistorius had been found guilty of murder.
"Completely missed the mark here. A court found you innocent. I believe the court and honour the decision. This guy shot and murdered a woman, as per the judgement and verdict. To believe the court's decision is to defend you and prosecute this scum bag," they commented.
"Poor form (and that is coming from a supporter of yours). The court system is one of the pillars of democracy and libertarianism, yet your irrationality has trapped you in political warfare against your own agenda."
Tostee responded saying he has never questioned the court's decision and in fact had not expressed his opinion of the case at all, instead stating that there are "too many people spouting uninformed nonsense and vitriol regardless of the case".
"Very few people other than those in the court have the full story - we can't trust the media to tell us the full facts in proper context, yet so many people have such strong opinions on these things," he responded.
"The point I'm making is that these are matters best left for the courts and not the angry mobs with the flaming torches."
