Fugitive arrested in luxury apartment

Fugitive Ricardo Barbaro, wanted for interview over a woman's Melbourne murder, has been arrested and charged in western Sydney.

Before his arrest in western Sydney last night police said there were negotiations and a "brief physical altercation" before he was taken into custody.

Police sources claim Mr Barbaro was arrested in a luxury apartment overlooking the Parramatta River in Wentworth Point according to The Age. Mr Barbaro had been in the penthouse apartment of a new housing development when he was found by police, according to the report.

Mr Barbaro had to be hospitalised with minor injuries after the arrest, before he was taken to Burwood Police Station and charged just after midnight on Thursday.

Mr Barbaro, 33, was wanted by police for questioning after the body of Ellie Price was found in her home in South Melbourne last week.

Police believe the 26-year-old mother was assaulted and her body left in the home for up to five days before it was discovered on May 4.

Police then made a public appeal for Barbaro to come forward and information on his whereabouts.

The 33-year-old Southport, Queensland, man was arrested by NSW Police in western Sydney after midnight on Thursday.

NSW Police said in a statement today they attended a unit at Amalfi Dr in Wentworth Point after 11pm on Wednesday.

He's been charged with apprehension on a warrant issued in Victoria and was refused bail. He'll appear in Parramatta Local Court today via video link.

The arrest follows an extensive investigation and operation by Victoria Police Homicide Squad and Fugitive Taskforce detectives with support from a number of other law enforcement agencies.

At this time, detectives are not searching for anyone else in relation to the investigation.

Victorian detectives will now travel to NSW to apply for his extradition to Melbourne.

During the search police said they'd had difficulty tracing Mr Barbaro, saying they'd conducted "significant searches" over four days, but hadn't been able to find him.

Police launched a public appeal, releasing images of Mr Barbaro, his Toyota Hiace van and Ms Price's missing Mercedes as they searched for the 33-year-old.

Ms Price and Mr Barbaro had an on-and-off relationship dating back to October last year.

"Barbaro and Ellie were known to each other and were believed to be in a relationship with each other from time to time since about October 2019," Detective Inspector Tim Day said last Friday.

"We have a young female 26 years of age who has died prematurely, has a family who is grieving for her and a community that is needing and deserving of answers," he said.

Following the appeal, officers found Ms Price's white Mercedes which had been left in Diggers Rest - about 40km from her home. However Mr Barbaro had not been with the vehicle.

On the afternoon Ms Price's body was found by police, neighbours had called police after hearing a loud disturbance coming from her townhouse. However, police now believe the young mum had lay dead for five days before her body was discovered.

Ms Price shared a chilling Facebook post before her death saying she'd been "taken by surprise" by the coronavirus pandemic and warning people not to take life for granted.

"May this make us stronger kinder to people more greatful (sic) of the little things in life," the mum wrote.

"Don't take life for granted."
