Freight train derailed near Nambucca Heads
UPDATE: A GOODS train derailed near Nambucca Heads yesterday afternoon in an incident that has seen a large area of track and two rail bridges damaged.
The Australian Rail Track Corporation has confirmed the derailment happened near Nambucca Heads on Wednesday around 2.10pm.
The location was this afternoon confirmed as being near Auld Close between Valla Beach and Nambucca Heads where the North Coast Railway Line crosses Deep Creek.
Images from the scenes reveal what could possibly have been a land subsidence.
Approximately four wagons derailed at the rear of the northbound freight service and there were no injuries to the train's crew, the ARTC said in a statement.
"Initial inspections indicate there is significant damage at the site to both the mainline and passing loop located in the area," An ARTC spokesman said.
"This includes up to 2000 sleepers damaged, damage to two bridge structures and other track infrastructure.
"This section of the line is currently closed and freight and passenger services between Brisbane and Sydney have been affected as a result.
"Rail maintenance crews are on site and will conduct repairs and planning for the wagon recovery process is also underway."
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator have been advised and are attending the incident site this morning for investigative purposes.
The ARTC said following release of the site by investigators, the focus will be on returning mainline operations.
The current forecast for a re-opening of the line is at approximately 6pm, on Friday subject to the recovery and repair works.
