Fraser Coast kayaking top in Aus

AN AUSTRALIAN adventurer who has spent more than 20 years searching for the most beautiful and unspoiled kayaking destinations in the country has revealed in his new book that Fraser Island and the Great Sandy Strait are among the best.

Andrew Gregory, an Australian Geographic Spirit of Adventure Award recipient, yesterday released Kayaking Around Australia – the only guide of its kind on the market.

He has dedicated an entire chapter to the waters stretching from Tin Can Bay to Sandy Cape, focusing on the Great Sandy Strait and Platypus Bay.

“It's a lovely place to kayak because of the sheltered and clear waters close to shore and the abundance of wildlife,” Mr Gregory said.

“From your kayak you can get close to sea eagles, dugongs, turtles and even whales.

“It's also possible to reach secluded wild camping areas in your kayak that are only accessible by boat.”

Mr Gregory, who has been travelling around Australia for more than 20 years, has visited Fraser Island many times, both with and without his kayak. In March, he did an extended trip along the west coast of the island in his kayak.

“The area is suitable for all skill levels,” he said.

“If you're a beginner you can paddle the west coast of Fraser Island without going far from shore.

“There is also excellent paddling close to the shore near Hervey Bay and in the rivers and bays.

“Experienced kayakers can do trips of many days and even leave the mainland to cross over to the island.”

Mr Gregory, based in Sydney, is also an award-winning photographer and many of his own photographs feature in the book.

“There are many options for paddling the coast of Fraser Island and the Great Sandy Straits and the book gives tips and suggested itineraries to help you plan your own trip, whether it's a base camp with day paddles or a multi-day trip,” he said.

The book includes 40 of the country's most beautiful spots and there is a section dedicated to camping facilities, access points and recreational activities.

PADDLE POWER

One hour of kayaking burns about 1000 calories and helps build and tone muscles in arms, shoulders, back and abdomen.

There is a reduced risk of wear-and-tear on joints and tissues, as kayaking is known for being a low-impact activity.

Kayaking is a peaceful, meditative pastime with great mental health benefits.

Enjoying fresh air and beautiful scenery is a great way to relax after a busy week

Ellen DeGeneres, Pink and Kate Hudson are among celebrities who love to kayak.
