Foot in door for world mark

MACKAY barefoot water skier Ashleigh-Kate Stebbeings is among the world's elite in her sport.

Stebbeings has been the only female training at the World Barefoot Centre at Florida, and the benefits showed when she won the women's division at the Australian championships at Longreach, where she set a pending world record.

Stebbeings scored a massive 5670 points in the tricks competition, which is expected to be recognised as a world record, following two months of training at Florida.

She said yesterday she was the only female at the Florida training centre, which was run by three of the best male barefoot water skiers in the world.

She is also the only female competitor to be sponsored to attend the centre.

“We were training every day, two times a day,” she said.

“It's a good opportunity to see how they can make a career of it.

"I don't think I'll do that but maybe I'll do some coaching.”

Stebbeings will return to the United States in June, when she will compete in the American championships in Texas, on the same water that will host the world championships next year.

She will also compete in the Canadian championships at Alberta later this year.

Stebbeings and Mackay's Milly Grech, who finished second overall in junior girls, were selected in the Australia team for the world championships.

Grech was second in the slalom and jumps and third in tricks, which involves doing as many frontwards and backwards turns as possible in two 15-second passes.
