Focusing on good health requires honesty with yourself

ARE you living a life that has not been prioritised or focused on optimum good health?

If you have been living in denial or not being honest with yourself, today might be the day to put your health to the forefront.

Stop avoiding the truth - do you need to lose weight, do you need to be fitter?

In life it's about the decisions made that may be holding us back from living a life of abundant good health and happiness.

Are you indulging in that second helping of ice-cream, having too many takeaways or are you just eating way more than you know you should?

These are the reasons why so many overweight people avoid getting on the scales or looking in a mirror.

I have to be honest with you, I did all of the above and more for too many years.

It seemed easier to avoid mirrors so I could ignore what was really going on with my body.

I was getting fatter and fatter and was on a roller coaster ride to being morbidly obese and seriously unwell. It can be hard facing your weaknesses and failed attempts at weight loss.

I know firsthand how this feels but when I think back to the days when I was hitting the scales at 100 kilos I know I was not facing up to the truth and being honest with myself.

I did discover something very important, that it was harder to be overweight than actually be on a healthy eating plan.

Even with hunger pangs and a change of diet there came with it a sense of pride, self-worth and positivity.

I remember feeling good about myself for the first time in many years as finally I was doing something about my weight problem.

Is it your time to shine?  Is it time to stop avoiding mirrors?  Maybe it's time to be truly honest with yourself.

No one but you created those extra bulges so do you need to 'man up' and take charge of your health and your future?

If you feel you aren't the weight you want to be then make today, right now the moment when you create the new you.

I ask you to throw out all your reasons, excuses, stories, tales or explanations on why you can't lose weight and start right now with a new fresh outlook.

Be honest and own your journey, put the past in the past and move forward to a positive future.

Think about what it is that you need to do today, not tomorrow but just for the next 24 hours.

Make each day count and do the best you can each day, soon you will see the results of your efforts and I guarantee you will like what you see and how you feel.

Choc Mint Squares

  • 2 egg whites
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon bicarb soda
  • ½ cup apple sauce (in jar)
  • ½ cup skim milk
  • 1¼ teaspoons peppermint essence
  • 15 squares (75g) dark cooking chocolate grated
  • 1½ cups self-raising flour
  • ⅓ cup cocoa
  • cooking spray

  • ½ cup icing sugar sifted
  • 1 teaspoon Flora® Light margarine
  • 6 drops peppermint essence
  • about 1 teaspoon skim milk

Preheat oven 180ºC fan forced.

Beat egg whites and sugar together in a medium size mixing bowl for 1 minute using an electric beater.

Stir bicarb soda into apple sauce (it will froth), then add to bowl. Add milk, essence and chocolate, combine well.

Sift flour and cocoa in one go, gently fold ingredients together.

DO NOT BEAT, as this will make the mixture tough. Once flour is combined, pour into a slab tin that has been coated with cooking spray.

Bake 20-25 minutes or until mixture springs back when lightly pressed in centre. Once cooled, cut into 15 slices then make icing.

To make icing: In a small mixing bowl combine all ingredients. Pour into small icing bag then pipe squiggles over top of each square.

Suitable to be frozen.

Variation: Omit peppermint essence for Choc Squares.

Note from Annette
If you get a craving for chocolate then here it is… but now you can enjoy it without the guilt.

When making this recipe, be exact with the peppermint essence to make sure you get the right taste.

An easy way to get the 6 drops for the icing is to use a medicine or eye dropper.

Dietitian's Tip
This potentially mood-lifting food need only be eaten occasionally.

It offers very little nutritional value.

For the weight conscious and those with diabetes one every now and again would be ample.
