Girl, 5, allegedly assaulted by two boys

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD Territory girl has allegedly been sexually assaulted by two boys under 10 in a remote community near Alice Springs, according to reports.

"Territory Families is working with NT Police as part of the Child Abuse Taskforce Southern to investigate allegations of the sexualised behaviour of three children under the age of 10 in the Central Australia region," a spokesman said.

"The child is safe and with family."

Territory Families did not answer questions from the NT News about whether the young girl was known to them, sighting privacy reasons.

Southern Serious Crime Group officer in charge Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Manley confirmed NT Police was looking into the incident, which occurred on October 6.

"Child Abuse Taskforce Southern comprised of police and Territory Families is investigating a report of sexual behaviour between three children under the age of 10 at a community north of Alice Springs," he said.

"There is no requirement to call for assistance from the public and the welfare of the children is the primary concern of the investigation going forwards."

Territory Families came under fire in February for its handling over the alleged rape of a two-year-old girl in Tennant Creek.

A 102-page report from Children's Commissioner Colleen Gwynne on the incident found the little girl and her four siblings were the subject of reports related to sexual abuse, physical harm, neglect, emotional harm, family violence and parental substance abuse.

According to the report, the girl's family came into contact with police more than 150 times and 52 child protection notifications were received about the family from 2002, 13 of which were substantiated.

In a shocking admission, Territory Families claimed the risk faced by the little girl before the alleged rape was "not dissimilar" to many other open child protection investigations.
