Five Aussie summer escapes you haven't thought of

NO SUMMER holiday plans yet? It's not too late to think of a summer escape, there are plenty of options available whether you want to get away over the Christmas/New Year week, or plan a holiday in January.

Here are five summer holiday choices with a difference, so get planning and get cracking.

High end

Lizard Island. Yes, it's exclusive but a place to spoil yourself and maybe do some celebrity spotting. With 24 powdery-white beaches and 40 luxurious suites in this tropical resort directly on the Great Barrier Reef, you can't get any more island-romantic. Snorkel, take in a game of tennis, or just lift yourself off the sunbed occasionally to drink and eat.

Mid range

Think Barossa Valley. This is South Australia's most visited tourist destination for good reason. The food and wine attraction is enormous and is backed-up by a range of exciting summer festivals.

Good value

A summer cruise is always an easy option and with Royal Caribbean and P&O sailing out of Brisbane it has never been easier. Short breaks around the Queensland Coast, to the South Pacific and PNG all make for a great holiday.

Something different

How about a city summer holiday? Melbourne offers all the culture of any large world-class city. Fashionistas will love the Viktor and Rolf (Dutch fashion designers) exhibition at The National Gallery Victoria with its avant-garde creations. Then there is Lee Mingwei's The Moving Garden exhibition also at the National Gallery Victoria, an artwork that creates a new, unexpected encounter in the city. Melbourne is foodie heaven backed-up by the summer night food markets operating until March.

Budget

Budget holidays at Emerald Beach are a great choice with options for beachfront locations at caravan parks on the North Coast midway between Sydney and Brisbane (and close to Coffs Harbour). The region has top beaches and surf spots, and just a stone's throw away are rivers and creeks to explore with a kayak or canoe.
