First look: Inside new Sum Yung Guys restaurant

Hugely popular Sunshine Coast eatery Sum Yung Guys is on the move.

The Sunshine Beach pan-Asian restaurant from MasterChef Alumus Matt Sinclair and his mates will relocate to a new home on Lake Weyba Dr in Noosaville next year when their current lease runs out.

"We'll start fitting out mid-January, do summer where we are and hope to be firing it up towards the end of April," Mr Sinclair said.

The cooking guru said the team had been eyeing off the site, formerly home to a Pizza Hut and a Thai restaurant, for years, and just knew they had to buy it when it became available.

"We love the spot, the location, it brings us more into the centre of Noosa, and it's ours - we're not going to be paying rent," he said.

The whopping 400sq m space complete with an undercover outdoor deck will become a more sleek and sophisticated SYG, while keeping true to the fun and playful personality of the original.

The new venue will be a bigger and more polished version of the original.

Expect beautiful wallpaper, polished concrete floors, lots of texture, black stained tables, colourful decorative ceramics, and the signature mural of the Sunshine Beach restaurant will also make its way into the new location.

New place for drinks before pizza action

"It's about still having the same energy but polishing it a bit more," Mr Sinclair said.

But the biggest change will be the addition of a stunning new brass and velvet lounge area, complete with a 9m bar.

There will be a moody lounge area for pre- and post-dinner drinks.

"We want to put a nice big bar and a lounge area in so people can have a drink before and after and have some snacks," Mr Sinclair said.

The bar means an expanded drinks list with some great Asian-inspired cocktails, while the new venue's bigger kitchen will also have the restaurant increasing its food menu.

"We want to have dishes on there that we know are tried and tested so we can kick off with strength and then start adding a few new things once we get comfortable," Mr Sinclair said, with up to six new dishes expected to be added.

Dylan Campbell, Matt Sinclair, Michael 'Moe' Rickard, and Jeremiah Jones will move into their new location in April next year.

The Sunshine Beach restaurant is currently running a set menu, which was introduced under pandemic restrictions. It is set to continue until Christmas, with the a la carte menu returning in January.

The last service at the original site is planned for Easter Sunday, April 4, with the new spot opening a couple of weeks later.
