Highway reopens after fatal crash

THE Pacific Highway at Warrell Creek six kilometres south of Macksville has reopened in both directions after its earlier closure due to a fatal truck and car accident.

At least one person was killed in the fiery crash between a truck and a car which blocked the highway.

A 200 metre exclusion zone was set up around where the car and B-double truck collided at Warrell Creek,  just before 4am (AEST), police said.

The truck, which was carrying chemicals, exploded in flames on impact, but Fire and Rescue NSW has since extinguished the blaze.

One person from the car has been confirmed dead, but police say it’s not clear how many people were in the car when it crashed.

The male truck driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries and taken to Macksville Hospital for observation.

The Pacific Highway is closed in both directions, with most traffic diverted onto local roads, but B-double trucks cannot use the alternative routes and are having to park until the highway has been cleared.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area as the highway is expected to be closed for several hours and there will be significant delays on the smaller roads.

Anyone planning to drive to Queensland or the far north coast is advised to use the New England Highway if possible.

Police from Mid North Coast Local Area Command and the Port Macquarie Crash Investigation Unit continue to conduct inquiries into the cause of the collision.

All vehicles except B-Double trucks are being diverted via Upper Warrell Creek Road.

Lengthy delays are expected and motorists are urged to avoid the area or delay their travel.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or circumstances leading up to it is urged to contact Port Macquarie Police Station via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
