Federer announced to play at Brisbane International

THE Brisbane International is set to serve up a thrill for tennis fans with news that 17-time grand slam winner Roger Federer will play in the tournament which starts on December 29.

It will be the first time the Swiss ace has played in the event which has been won for the last two years by 2013 Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.

Federer said he was pleased he would finally have a chance to play in Brisbane.

"I've heard many great things from the other players, they say it's a very friendly tournament, fan friendly, player friendly," he said. "I'm happy we are all able to make it work."

The 31-year-old, who has slipped to No.5 in the world, said the last time he had been to the Sunshine State was for a family holiday when he was 14.

"We visited Rainbow Beach; we spent a few nights in Brisbane, and then went up to Cairns. We also went to the Great Barrier Reef ... we had a good time and ever since I've loved Australia.," he said.

Tournament director Cameron Pearson no doubt hopes he can entice Murray back to defend his title.
