Father crushed to death on road

A FATHER has been crushed to death by a shipping container on a busy Sydney highway.

About 10.45am Thursday the man was turning at the intersection of the Cumberland and Hume Hwys when a shipping container fell off a semi-trailer and landed on his car.

Toys were scattered over the road leading rescue crews to fear the worse but by early afternoon police confirmed no children were trapped inside.

The body of a 48-year-old man has since been pulled from the wreckage.

Police have not released his name.
